AMRITSAR: Radical pro-Khalistan preacher Amritpal Singh's mother Balwinder Kaur has urged the Centre to shift her son and other accused detained under the National Security Act to prisons in Punjab.

Amritpal and other detainees are currently lodged in the Dibrugarh jail in Assam.

Expressing concerns over the challenges faced by their families in visiting them at Dibrugarh jail, Kaur said that it was essential for the detainees, including her son Amritpal, to be transferred to jails in Punjab.

Kaur also expressed dismay stating that the detainees had been allegedly denied the basic right to meet their lawyers in the jail.

“This is the reason why my son, his wife, and other Sikhs lodged in Dibrugarh jail were forced to begin a hunger strike,” she said.

Meanwhile, Bhai Ram Singh, chief of Sangrawan faction of Damdami Taksal, strongly condemned the denial of permission to meet the relatives and lawyers of the detainees, deeming it a violation of human rights.

Amritpal's wife Kirandeep Kaur has said that the police had undertaken the responsibility of obtaining permission for advocate Rajdev Singh to meet Amritpal in jail.

“As of yet the only update is that police have taken responsibility to get permission for Rajdev Singh Khalsa to visit but as of yet the message or any confirmation that he has been granted permission has not come through to me and therefore I am continuing the hunger strike," said Kirandeep.
