BATHINDA: After witnessing a large number of crop residue burning cases for 12 consecutive days, Punjab heaved a sigh of relief as just six stubble burning incidents were reported on Friday.
The decrease in farm fires follows the day when over 200 FIRs were registered against the farmers for burning crop residue. Acting on the November 7 order of the Supreme Court, the DCs and SSPs along with police personnel had descended at the fields on Thursday and Friday. It is for the first time this season that Punjab fell behind Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan - the states that otherwise record much fewer fire incidents than Punjab. With Friday's addition, the total farm fire cases in Punjab have gone up to 23,626.
As per the Punjab remote sensing centre, out of the six cases, two each were reported from Fazilka and Ludhiana and one each in Sangrur and Gurdaspur districts.
