“With the Punjabi film industry growing, we are witnessing more quality

Punjabi films

being created in all genres, but due to the lack of support for many emerging filmmakers, and the overall under-representation of Punjabi cinema, Visaff aims to provide a platform for all South Asian Canadians to showcase their creativity,“ one of Visaff 's co-producers Jessie Lehail told TOI. She said with so many Punjabi films created in Vancouver and its surrounding areas, Visaff would include some Punjabi films too.

Another Visaff co-producer Mannu Sandhu said since Visaff presented films in their original languages with sub-titles, there was an effort to build

cross-cultural bridges

with other creative directors.

“Visaff wants to help creative directors -especially youngsters -harness their identity , language, and culture in a variety of art forms.Audiences can expect films with wide-ranging stories of what matters to Punjabis in terms of social issues and reality,“ she said.

“Visaff is a forward-thinking

story-telling festival

, and we have been supporting work that goes beyond Bollywood for many years. Year after year, the festival pursues new ways to support artistes and introduce more people to original, authentic South Asian story-telling,“ said Mannu.
