PHAGWARA: In the wee hours of Tuesday, a Nihang Sikh murdered an unidentified man at Chaurra Khooh Gurdwara in Phagwara, claiming that the deceased had come to commit sacrilege.
Prior to the killing, Nihang Ramandeep Singh uploaded a video of the young man, who stated that he was sent by someone to engage in wrongdoing. Singh also uploaded a short video clip confessing to the murder.
According to the police and other sources, the deceased entered the gurdwara around 10pm and went into a washroom. The gurdwara caretakers became aware of his presence around 1am when one of them entered the washroom. Despite their requests, the man refused to come out, but was eventually brought out by the caretakers.
Sikh activists at the gurdwara questioned him, and he allegedly confessed to being sent by someone to commit wrongful acts at the gurdwara, which was recorded on video. Two of the caretakers went to the police station to inform them of the situation, and during this time, the Nihang killed the man.
The Nihang was later apprehended by the police and formally arrested. The police have registered a case against the deceased under section 295A of the IPC and against the Nihang under section 304 IPC for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
The accused Nihang's associates have claimed that he acted in self-defense after the initial attack by the deceased.
