AMRITSAR: There is speculation that Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Bikram Singh Majithia may withdraw his nomination from the Majitha assembly constituency and contest only from the Amritsar East assembly constituency. This speculation got a boost on Monday after his wife Ganieve Kaur filed her nomination papers as a SAD (B) candidate from the Majitha constituency.
Bikram Majithia is contesting both from his family stronghold of Majitha and Amritsar East from where Punjab Pradesh Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu is contesting elections.
As per official information, Ganieve Kaur, resident of House No. 97, Ward No. 5, Majitha filed her nomination papers as a SAD (B) candidate. Her name was proposed by Bikramjit Singh.
When contacted, SAD(B) Amritsar district president Gurpartap Singh Tikka said she could have filed nomination papers as a covering candidate.
In the recent past, Sidhu had challenged Majithia to leave the Majitha constituency and contest against him from the Amritsar East assembly constituency.
"Though the party has not announced anything so far, the possibility is that Majithia could withdraw his nominations from Majitha and focus his attention only on Amritsar East," senior Akali sources said and added that Majitha was a well-nurtured constituency of the Majithias and didn't have any strong opposition candidate. They added that even if Ganieve had filed nomination papers as a covering candidate she had filed papers only from the Majitha assembly constituency and not from Amritsar East.
A Congress activist, who is part of Sidhu's campaign team, said: "If Majithia focused only on one seat then the competition will get only tougher but Sidhu has his own appeal and image which can't be matched by Majithia."
