Punjab: Attack on BJP leader raises security concerns of Saffron party leaders

AMRITSAR: The occurrence of a second assault on a young BJP leader within eight months has raised alarm bells ringing in the BJP leadership as concerns have emerged regarding the security of party members amid a growing sense of desperation among the opposition leadership as the saffron party continues to achieve new milestones.


"Our ongoing concerns about the worsening law and order situation in Punjab have been validated by the recent attack on our Verka Mandal Pradhan, Gurmukh Singh Bal as this incident serves as a stark example of the issues we have been highlighting” said BJP Amritsar president Harwinder Singh Sandhu on Monday.

Stating that they were yet to receive a satisfactory response from the police, Harwinder said that they intend to await the police's reply before escalating the matter to higher levels and addressing it at every possible avenue.

Earlier in April 2023, Balwinder Gill, Punjab BJP (SC) morcha general secretary was shot at by the unidentified persons in Jandiala Guru areas of Amritsar.

When contacted, Gurmukh explained that on Sunday night, he was traveling with a group of people in two separate cars. However, just before reaching the overbridge near Vallaha, he switched vehicles but shortly thereafter, the assailants targeted the car he was traveling earlier which played a crucial role in his survival during the attack.

Citing a prior incident of attack during past assembly elections, Gurmukh suggested the possibility of being targeted by politically motivated people who may harbour resentment towards the BJP's growing influence. Without naming anyone , he said several youth leaders of BJP were on the target of jealous politicians as they find it easier to pave their way, added he.

Contrary to Gurmukh's account, SHO Maqboolpura, Mohit Kumar, refuted the notion of an attack on Gurmukh. While pointing to the preliminary investigations, he said that there had been an accident leading to a scuffle adding that the investigations were still in progress.

In response, Gurmukh contested the police version, claiming that there was no accident. According to him, the assailants intentionally stopped their car alongside his friends' and supporters' vehicle and opened gunfire.”I don’t know why police is saying so” he said
