Jathedar censures police personnel
AMRITSAR: Akal Takht jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh has censured the law enforcement personnel for allegedly entering a gurdwara wearing shoes. He attributed the responsibility for this breach of maryada (Sikh code of religious conduct) to the local administration.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, the jathedar expressed concern over the impact on the Sikh psyche due to the altercation at Gurdwara Akal Bunga (Chaoni Nihang Singhs) at Sultanpur Lodhi, where preparations were going on for the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev, the firs Sikh master.
"During the ongoing akhand path, the intrusion of the police personnel into the chaoni posed a threat to the sacred recitations. But the employees of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) ensured the seamless progress of the sacred readings by promptly stepping in," he said.
Raghbir Singh also expressed concern over the demise of a security personal during the incident. However, he said police intervention in the internal matter of the Nihang organisations was unprofessional, and it not only violated the maryada, but also posed a question mark on the intentions of the Punjab government.
