AMRITSAR: The attack on the Hindu Sabha temple in Canada's Brampton allegedly by pro-Khalistani elements has sparked discussions among various persons, organizations including the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) in Europe, about how to address these issues on an international level.
Stating that the recent attack on the Hindu temple in Brampton, Canada, highlights significant concerns regarding community relations, freedom of expression, and the rule of law within a multicultural society, Rajwinder Singh , Coordinator, IOC , Europe, said “This incident stresses on the necessity for all communities in Canada to operate within the framework of the Canadian Constitution, which guarantees rights and freedoms while simultaneously promoting respect and understanding among diverse groups”.
Violence, particularly in a place of worship, cannot be justified under the guise of freedom of expression, he said adding that every community in Canada must recognize that the freedoms granted to one group are equally applicable to all others.
“Mutual respect and coexistence are key to Canadian society, so it’s important that people do not turn to violence to express their grievances or beliefs” said Rajwinder.
When asked about the reports of potential infiltration of pro-Khalistan elements into Canadian law enforcement or the judicial system , he said that regardless of external influences, all persons and groups must operate within the bounds of the Canadian Constitution. The rule of law must prevail, ensuring that no one is above accountability, regardless of their political or ideological affiliations, said he.
Gurminder Kaur Randhawa, Vice President of IOC UK said “It is unfortunate to see such incidents occur as the world is increasingly appreciating diversity, protecting individual rights to follow and practice their beliefs and promote non violence”.
Sonia Heldsted from Sweden that the responsibility to uphold peace and respect lies with all Canadians, irrespective of their backgrounds. She opined that Canadian community leaders and members must engage in constructive dialogue and peaceful advocacy to address grievances rather than resorting to violence.
“We will engage with peace-loving persons worldwide to urge the Canadian government to take action against those responsible for this disgraceful incident”said Rajwinder.
