AMRITSAR: The Indian hockey team arrived at Sri Guru Ram Das Ji International Airport in Amritsar on Sunday to a warm and enthusiastic welcome from their parents, relatives, friends, Punjab govt ministers, officials and supporters.

Prominent among others who were present at the airport included MP Gurjit Singh Aujla, Punjab cabinet minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, Harbhajan Singh ETO and MLA Pargat Singh.

The triumphant return of the Indian hockey team — the bronze medal winner at Paris Olympic — was marked by emotional reunions with their families, who felt proud of their sons for having “brought glory to the nation”.

Upon their landing, the team headed for the Golden Temple first to offer prayers of gratitude and seek divine blessings for their fruther achievements.

In a brief interaction with the media, Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh said it was really a matter of immense pride to see the Indian flag fluttering high in France and Indian supporters encouraging and motivating them.

He said it was not an easy task to win back-to-back medals in the Olympics. “Last time too when we had won the medal, we came to pay obeisance here,” he said.

The Indian hockey team players are determined to win gold in the next Olympics, with a kind of promise to themselves and the nation — “Next time, we will change the colour of the medal.”

Dhaliwal told the hockey players that Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann has already announced Rs 1-crore cash for each player. The team received a warm welcome at the Golden Temple’s Information Centre.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee president Harjinder Singh Dhami presented the team with a model of the Golden Temple, a set of religious books and a Siropa (robe of honour). Captain Harmanpreet Singh became the tournament’s leading goal getter , who dodged the opponent custodians no less than 10 times, seven of those while converting penalty conrners for the team and thrice while capitalising on penalty strokes in eight matches. India beat Spain 2-1 for their second consecutive bronze medal at the Olympics following Tokyo 2020.
