AMRITSAR: Amritpal alias Amri, affiliated with the Happy Jat gang, was on Wednesday allegedly killed in an encounter with the police in Jandiala near Amritsar.

The police had arrested Amri on Tuesday and had brought him to Jandiala on Wednesday where he confessed to having concealed 2 kg heroin, but what he didn't tell the police was that he had also hidden a 9mm pistol along with the contraband, which he grabbed despite being handcuffed and shot at the accompanying policemen, leaving two of them injured. The gangster was killed in the retaliatory fire.

SSP, Amritsar Rural, Satinder Singh said Amri was a member of the Happy Jat gang and was wanted in three murder cases. He was also wanted in three cases of attempt to murder, said the SSP.

Amri had hidden a 9mm imported pistol along with heroin, which he had not disclosed to the police. He used the same pistol to shoot the accompanying policemen and in a retaliatory firing, the gangster was killed.

A relative of Amritpal, who hailed from Bhagwan village near Jandiala, said Amri earlier worked as a construction labourer but due to his illicit activities, the family had severed all ties with him, and he had not visited home for over two years.

The family, however, feigned ignorance about Amritpal's purported engagement in criminal activities or being involved in drug trade.
