Many gurdwara managements are holding special functions to teach turban tying free of charge and are distributing turbans among people of all age groups.

Gurdwaras in many countries have also planned various Sikh religious activities, including gatka, and are preparing to demonstrate their skills during Baba Nanak’s birth anniversary, being celebrated on November 15 (Friday) and in most gurdwaras across Europe on November 17 (Sunday).

Surinder Singh Parmar, a senior member of the Austrian Sikh community, said a large number of gurdwaras across Europe would hold ‘Dastar da langar’ to mark the occasion.

He said the turban is a powerful symbol of Sikhism, representing the “commitment to live by the values of Sikh teachings, including honesty, compassion, and equality.” However, in recent years, many Sikhs, particularly the younger generation, have distanced themselves from this sacred tradition, “either by cutting their hair or choosing not to wear the turban.”

Rajwinder Singh from Switzerland said, “We believe there is a need to reconnect Sikh children, especially those who distanced themselves from their faith, by providing free turbans and teaching how to tie them.

This initiative will promote cultural pride, preserve Sikh traditions, and reinforce Sikhism’s values of dignity and equality.” He said preparations to celebrate Baba Nanak’s birth anniversary are being made in gurdwaras in Zurich, Denizen, Langenthal, and Geneva.

Thai Sikh, Darshan Singh Sachdev, also known by his Thai name Sakda Sachamitr, said that preparations for the celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev’s birth anniversary on November 15 are underway across Thailand.

“The main event will take place at Sri Guru Singh Sabha, Bangkok,” he said. The Akhand Path will begin on November 12, with the bhog (completion ceremony) scheduled for November 15.

Darshan Singh said various functions are being organised to impart Sikh teachings to the younger generation, ensuring they remain connected to the core principles of Sikhism.
