Congress sweeps polls in Amritsar, Gurdaspur

AMRITSAR: Barring Majitha, Congress won block samiti and zila parishad elections with a thumping majority in Amritsar district. Of the nine blocks of Amritsar, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) won 20 out of 24 seats in Majitha block.
In the remaining eight blocks, Congress candidates recorded victories. As the results of Majitha block were announced, Akalis burst into celebrations.

SAD secretary Bikram Singh Majithia, in a statement issued after the results, said, "We achieved 100% success in zila parishad elections and 95% victory in block samiti due to the valour of voters and SAD workers, who believed in democracy and stood their ground despite hostility and victimization."
Majithia cautioned the Congress not to go against the people of Punjab. In Gurdaspur district, Congress bagged 212 out of 213 block samiti seats, while one seat went to an independent candidate. All 25 seats of the zila parishad also went to the Congress.
