BJP spokesperson to wear black turban on Human Rights Day to seek Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar’s release
JALANDHAR: R P Singh, the national spokesperson of the BJP, has declared his intention to wear a black turban on December 10, International Human Rights Day, as a symbolic gesture advocating for the release of Devinder Pal Singh Bhullar. Bhullar is currently under medical treatment for schizophrenia at the Department of Psychiatry, Government Hospital, Amritsar, through the central Jail, Amritsar.Singh, in a tweet, highlighted Bhullar's status as a life convict of the Delhi State, having served over 28 years in prison. He emphasized that Bhullar has been undergoing intensive medical treatment for the past 12 years. The decision for his release is pending with the Sentence Review Board of the Delhi Government, led by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.The initiative to wear black turbans on December 10 was promoted by rights advocate Jaspal Singh Manjhpur, also Bhullar’s counsel. R P Singh had previously met with Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena on November 26, urging him to initiate the process for Bhullar’s release on Guru Nanak’s birth anniversary and convene a meeting of the Sentence Review Board.In his memorandum to the LG, Singh attached a letter issued by the Union Government on October 11, 2019, on the occasion of Guru Nanak’s 550th birth anniversary. The letter conveyed the central government's concurrence to remission and release of Bhullar and seven other Sikh prisoners.
