KADAPA:
Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy on Monday said the state government will not support implementation of the
National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the state, even as protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act continued to intensify across the nation. The AP chief minister made his stand public during three-day tour of his home district Kadapa.
"We will oppose the NRC. There is no question of supporting the NRC. Our deputy chief minister (minority affairs) SB Amzath Basha discussed the NRC issue with us and issued a categorical statement that the state government of Andhra Pradesh will not support the NRC at any cost. The state government backs the statement of deputy chief minister SB Amzath Basha on the issue," said Jagan.
It was only 10 days ago that the YSR Congress Party had supported the Citizens Amendment Bill which was passed in the parliament.
Last week, deputy chief minister SB Amzath Basha issued a statement that the Andhra Pradesh government will not support the NRC and that chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy had assured him the state government will oppose any bill which is detrimental to the interests of Muslims.
On Monday, chief minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy himself announced the official stand of Andhra Pradesh to oppose the NRC.
