TIRUPATI: An unidentified group of individuals attacked and set a teenager ablaze at Basinikonda in Annamayya district on Monday.

The victim, identified as Sheikh Altaf (19), is undergoing treatment at Madanapalle District Government Hospital for severe burns.

Altaf is a student at Palamaner madrasa in Chittoor district and the son of Sheikh Mastan at Drivers Colony in Basinikonda.

According to sources, the incident occurred in the morning when Altaf was on his way to madrasa in a bus. He was trailed by three masked men riding a two-wheeler, who intercepted him at Punganur bus stand.

The assailants then forced him to accompany them to a location near a juice factory, where they subjected him to threats and verbal abuse.

The attackers allegedly doused Altaf with petrol and set him on fire when he attempted to flee. Nearby residents rushed to his aid and managed to extinguish the flames and took him to hospital.

Deputy superintendent of police K Kesappa along with taluk circle inspector Satyanarayana visited the hospital to gather preliminary information from the victim.

A case of attempted murder has been registered based on the complaint filed by Altaf's father. The police have not stated yet any possible motive for the attack. Sources, however, said Altaf had been friendly with an 11-year-old girl hailing from Basinikonda panchayat recently.
