Vikram Reddy left the rival candidates way behind right from the beginning of the counting of votes on Sunday and continued the same pace till the end of the counting.

Celebrations broke out in the YSRCP camp in the constituency soon after declaration of by-election result. Vikram Reddy secured a total of 1,02,240 votes while BJP candidate Bharath Kumar got 19,352 votes.

With opposition TDP staying away from the contest, it turned almost one-sided as Vikram Reddy won the seat with a record margin. BJP nominee Bharath Kumar emerged as nearest rival to Vikram Reddy by securing decent votes. EC observer Suresh Kumar, returning officer and joint collector Harendhira Prasad monitored the counting process held at Andhra Engineering College campus in Atmakur of Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore district.

The by-election to Atmakur constituency was held on Thursday. The by-election was necessitated following the death of sitting legislator Mekapati Gautham Reddy, who served as minister in YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s cabinet. YSRCP fielded Gautham’s younger brother Vikram as its candidate for the bypoll.

Interestingly, Vikram’s majority was almost four times the majority secured by Gautham in 2019 elections. While Gautham defeated TDP candidate Bollineni Krishnaiah with 22,276 votes majority, Vikram’s majority was over 82,000 votes. This is the highest-ever majority secured by any candidate in Atmakur constituency.

“This is a tribute paid by the people to my brother Gautham Reddy. People have once again showed that they are with YS Jagan Mohan Reddy,” said Vikram Reddy.

Interestingly, YSRCP candidate in Badvel assembly by-election, Dr Dasari Sudha had also won the seat with over 90,000 votes last November. Atmakur assembly is third by-election to be held in the state after 2019 general elections. Tirupati Lok Sabha constituency had also witnessed by-election following the sudden death of sitting MP B Durgaprasada Rao. YSRCP retained the seat with a whopping 2.7 lakh votes majority in May, 2021.
