Yamuna riverfront set for spiritual-leisure mix
Prayagraj: The Yamuna riverfront is set to witness a mix of spirituality and leisure, with the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation planning curated experiences that combine cultural traditions with modern recreation.Soon, residents and visitors may celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, family gatherings and even participate in religious events like Sunder Kand recitations on floating jetties and Shikara-style boats. Officials said the concept draws inspiration from waterfront tourism models seen in cities like Mumbai and Goa but has been adapted to preserve the religious sanctity of the Sangam city. Strict norms have been put in place prohibiting non-vegetarian food, alcohol and tobacco on these river-based facilities. Under the Smart City project, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has partnered with Entartica Sea World to develop a jetty at Kali Ghat in the coming months. Additional municipal commissioner Deependra Yadav said the initiative aims to offer a festive yet culturally respectful experience along the riverfront. The recently launched floating restaurant is already attracting attention. With a capacity of 40 guests and a purely vegetarian menu, it has become popular among locals as well as tourists. The private operator, which also runs similar services in Goa and Mumbai, contributes an annual revenue of Rs 32 lakh to the civic body. To enhance the experience, several water sports activities have also been introduced, including speedboats, banana rides, catamaran cruises and pontoon rides. These are operated by trained professionals certified by the National Institute of Watersports. Officials said more themed packages are being planned, including meditation sessions and spiritual discourses on water. Boats will be equipped with music systems and customised decorations for different occasions. Pricing ranges from Rs 500 per person to Rs 5,000 for a full boat. Bookings can be made both offline at Kali Ghat and online through BookMyShow. Safety measures include dedicated rescue boats patrolling the area. Authorities believe the initiative will boost tourism and generate additional revenue, especially in view of preparations for Kumbh Mela 2031.
