Prayagraj: The Allahabad University campus once again witnessed heavy protest by student leaders on Thursday. The entire Arts campus and the surrounding areas were turned into a fortress with additional police force being deployed in and around the university. Police also used mild force to disperse the agitating students, who were demanding holding of annual exams in an online mode for the past fortnight.
As the day began and the varsity authorities started with the interviews being conducted by the selection committee at AU guest house, a large number of student leaders arrived on the main gate of the guest house and tried to disrupt the interviews.
Soon, a heavy police force was called in which chased away the student leaders.
However, the agitated student leaders arrived at the Arts campus and blocked the road in front of the Library gate of AU. Another group of student leaders along with their supporting students moved from one department to another, asking the staff to close the department.
Getting the news of the pandemonium, a large number of police force entered the Arts campus. The officers first tried to convince the student leaders to call off their agitation, but when the same failed to make any impact, police used mild force and chased away the protesting students. Some of the students allegedly got injured in the chaos.
Police have detained some of the student leaders from the protesting site. The student leaders, while being taken away in a police van, were heard appealing to their fellow students to continue the protest but in a peaceful manner.
“We have detained three student leaders who were protesting at the Arts campus of AU,” said CO Colonelganj, Ajeet Kumar Chauhan.
Meanwhile, AU administration suspended four students on charge of disrupting the selection committee and the peace of the campus.
“These students have been suspended with immediate effect and have been asked to report to the chief proctors’ office on March 10 along with their parents, explaining why they should not be expelled from AU,” said AU chief proctor, Prof
Harsh Kumar.
