He was born on May 1,1913. His real moment of glory came with the resounding acclaim and applause he received for his performance in the 1953 Bimal Roy classic, titled Do Bigha Zameen. The story of this film is set in WW II and the Bengal famine of 1943 with the ideology of national building. Its sense of realism, laced with symbols, made it a very powerful film that influenced the style of films of the time that depicted deprivation in the rural areas.
