‘Pustakopahar’: Joy of giving & learning

Prayagraj: The Pustakopahar initiative, conceptualised in 2016 by the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan, is showing encouraging results and has come handy for students in Kendriya Vidyalaya’s in the district.

The authorities of KVS had asked principals of all 1,200-odd KVs of the country to motivate their students to donate textbooks to their juniors, helping save money as well as environment, by cutting down the need to print more books.

“The project to reuse donated textbooks received a commendable response in all 39 KVs that come under the Varanasi region, as a sizable number of students of almost all classes adopted this practice of book donation,” said Ajay Kumar Mishra, deputy commissioner of KVS Varanasi region.

Principal, KV New Cantt, Suchitra said, “Like in previous years, 165 students donated books to their juniors this year, many of them donating the entire set of books. In all, around 700 books were received by students promoted to new classes.”

At the KV at IIIT Jhalwa, 356 books were donated by students passing out of various classes. “Although the school is small in terms of strength, students have shown a big heart and over 350 books were gifted by them under the Pustakopahar scheme,” said principal of the school, B N Pandey. This initiative has come handy especially for those who were not from well-off families, added the principal.

“The books were either presented by the students to the juniors or donated them to the school library, from where they were later given to students in need,” said Manish Tiwari, principal of KV AFS Manauri.

The practice was followed with equal passion in KV’s far from the urban cluster as cited by Ashutosh Pandey, principal of KV, Chero, Salempur in Deoria. “When I was PG teacher at KV Jhalwa in Prayagraj, students were enthusiastic to donate their books and when I joined KV Chero as principal, I was surprised and happy to see the same enthusiasm among student fraternity as 126 students donated 445 books to their juniors”, said Salempur, .

Students are also being encouraged to present even reference books, novels, non-fiction, etc from their personal collection to other students.
