"The first batch of products, weighing around 220 kg, was dispatched to the Maha Kumbh on Monday. Over 50 inmates worked tirelessly to prepare various amla products in the past 20 days. Another team of 15 inmates is currently busy preparing additional amla products," jail superintendent Rishabh Dwivedi told TOI.

The amla processing initiative is part of the Uttar Pradesh prison department's OJOP (One Jail One Product) scheme, which aligns with the ODOP (One District One Product) programme.

"District jail Pratapgarh was allotted amla products. In continuation of that, we imparted training to 57 inmates in food processing under the state govt's 'Kaushal Vikas Mission' last year," Dwivedi said.

He added that 20 district jails, including Pratapgarh, have been selected to showcase their products made by inmates under the One Jail One Product scheme at the Maha Kumbh.

The amla processing centre was established in Nov 2024 at Pratapgarh district jail, Dwivedi said and added that there is high demand for amla products from various social, religious, and spiritual organizations at the Kumbh.

Amla is known to have had an influence on wellness for centuries. The berries have been used in traditional medicine to support digestive health, improve immunity, and manage blood sugar levels.
