Allahabad: The municipal authorities are taking steps to generate electricity from garbage. Hari Bhari, the company engaged by Allahabad Municipal Corporation for door-to-door garbage collection, will set up an electricity plant at the solid waste management plant at Baswar soon. It would generate about 6 mega watt of electricity. The city will become the first city in Uttar Pradesh which will generate electricity from waste.
MD of Hari Bhari Amit Paras Nath Kumar said, "We are going to set up a 6 mw power plant which would generate electricity through waste." There are three kinds of waste generated in the city. These are bio-degradable (left-over eatables, peels of vegetables and fruitsetc), combustible (clothes, paper, plastic and other material) and concrete debris waste (building material).
Electricity will be generated through combustible waste. About 200 mt of combustible waste is being collected from the different parts of the city in the whole day. This waste will be put in the plant which will be processed to produce electricity. The total amount of garbage collected in the city is about 600 MTs.
The bio-degradable waste is being utilized in making fertilizers. The concrete debris waste is used to make interlocking bricks.
Hari Bhari director MMA Siddiqui said that about Rs 80 crore will be spent on setting up of the plant and the work will be completed within a year.
Municipal commissioner Devendra Kumar Pandey said, "We are taking steps for the generation of electricity from the waste produced in the city. The power would be purchased by the electricity distribution companies.
