NCR mulls online booking system for porters

Prayagraj: In a move aimed at improving passenger convenience, the North Central Railway’s Prayagraj division is considering introducing an online booking system for porters (coolies) at railway stations.

The proposal is intended to address long-standing issues faced by passengers, including the difficulty of finding porters and negotiating fares, particularly during peak travel periods.

The proposed system would allow passengers to book a porter in advance through the railway’s official app or website, based on their train’s schedule.

“Under the plan, once a passenger reaches the station, the assigned porter would be available at a designated location to assist with luggage. A transparent digital payment mechanism is also being planned, ensuring that passengers are aware of the fixed charges in advance and are protected from overcharging,” a senior officer of the division said.

The initiative is expected to bring greater discipline, accountability and transparency to porter services, while improving the overall travel experience for passengers.

According to sources in the commercial department, the proposal includes an initial rollout at major stations such as Prayagraj Junction, Chheoki Railway Station, Kanpur Central, Mirzapur Railway Station, Etawah Railway Station and Aligarh Junction. Depending on its feasibility and response, the system may later be expanded to other stations.

The official added that preparations and feasibility assessments are currently underway before a final decision on implementation is taken.
