Life imprisonment to CO in rape case

ALLAHABAD: The district and sessions judge, Kaushambi, on Friday sentenced a deputy superintendent of police to life imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 20,000 in a case of rape. The court has also sentenced a co-accused woman to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10,000.
According to facts of the case, the accused Devraj was posted as circle officer in Manjhanpur of neighbouring Kaushambi district.

On December 7, 2002, co-accused Kaushalya Devi brought the victim Savita Devi (name changed) to the CO on the pretext of having her dispute with her (Savita's) husband, sorted out.
Kaushalya left Savita at the CO office and left for fetching water after which the CO was stated to have outraged Savita's modesty. After lower wrung police officials refused to entertain the victims plea for justice, the then IG zone ordered a probe. A total of nine witnesses appeared on behalf of the victim whereas seven witnesses appeared for the accused.
