ALLAHABAD: Commotion was created on the campus of Allahabad Municipal Corporation as activists of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) were protesting on the lackadaisical response of the authorities to solve the civic woes of the people. As the activists were trying to burn the effigy of mayor Chowdhry Jitendra Nath Singh, police intervened and lathicharge was done to dissuade the activists from doing so.
Later, additional municipal commissioner GN Shukla arrived on the scene and tried to assuage the feelings of the protestors.
The activists of BJYM reached AMC campus at about 12:00 noon under the leadership of Shashank Shekhar Pandey, city president of the organization. They raised slogans against the AMC's officials about the deteriorating sanitation condition and various civic woes facing the people. They demanded the removal of municipal commissioner and resignation of the mayor for not taking pragmatic steps to solve people woes.
As the activists were trying to burn the effigy of the mayor, police from Civil Lines police station reached the site and tried to snatch the effigy. The police force used lathicharge in which several officeholders of BJYM sustained injuries. The activist who recived injures included Shashank Shekhar Pandey, Nar Singh, T N Pandey and others.
Additional municipal commsioner GN Shukla reached the site and took the memorandum form the protesting activists. He gave patient hearing to their complaints. Shashank Shekhar Pandey informed that the whole city is facing acute shortage of water. Most of the drains have not been cleaned and there is insanitation in different parts of the city. He also said that he has submitted many memorandum on civic issues but no action has been taken.
Meanwhile, GN Shukla informed that a meeting of AMC officials has been convened on June 29 to deliberate on the points raised by BJYM activists to take concrete action.
