ALLAHABAD: The
Allahabad high court
on Wednesday sought information from the state government about the alleged misappropriation of funds by Samajwadi Party MP
Azam Khan in the name of
Mohammad Ali Jauhar University
in Rampur.
Hearing a PIL petition filed by Faisal Khan seeking a CBI probe into the matter, a division bench comprising Chief Justice Govind Mathur and Justice Samit Gopal fixed January 29 as the next date of hearing.
The petitioner claimed that university’s property amounting to Rs 80 crore was being used by Khan for private purposes.
He also requested the court to direct a CBI investigation into the matter and ensure recovery of the amount misappropriated by Khan.
When the court asked about the need to entertain the PIL when several FIRs had already been filed regarding misappropriation of funds, the petitioner’s counsel argued that assessment and recovery of funds could not be done in criminal proceedings initiated through FIR and as per reports of district administration, the matter should be probed by higher authorities.
