ALLAHABAD: The

Allahabad high court

on Thursday turned down the request of a

gay couple

which had sought police

security

cover following threats from their parents.

Living together, the men said their parents were against their relationship and had even been threatening them with dire consequences. Fearing for their lives, the couple had petitioned the court to direct police to provide protection to them.

However, a division bench comprising Justice Pankaj Mithal and Justice Mukhtar Ahmed refused protection to the petitioners from their parents and dismissed the petition. The court said it could not interfere in the matter as it was a “social problem”.

The petitioners,

Shamli

residents Gulfam Malik and Munavvar, said they were in love and as adults had the right to live together. However, their parents were against their relationship and were forcing them to separate.

In their petition, they alleged that they had approached the superintendent of police in Shamli, but nothing had been done.
