PRAYAGRAJ: A 20-year-old man allegedly slashed his genitals in a desperate bid to change his sex. The athome procedure, however, went wrong and he had to be rushed to hospital bleeding profusely.
Dr Santosh Singh, a senior surgeon at SRN Hospital, said the man's condition was stable. "He told us he wanted to change his sex since he was 14 and developed a ," Singh told TOI.
The man allegedly watched videos online and consulted a local doctor to learn more about the surgical process for sex change.
Acting on his own, he administered anaesthesia and used a surgical blade to bobbitise himself Tuesday. However, as soon as the anaesthesia wore off, he experienced unbearable pain.
As his condition worsened, he sought help from his landlord. He was rushed to Tej Bahadur Sapru Hospital, from where he was referred to SRN Hospital.
A native of Amethi, the man's father is a farmer and mother a housewife. He lives in a rented place in Prayagraj and is preparing for UPSC exams. He told doctors he was not able to focus as he was desperate to change his gender.
Singh added, "We have informed his family members of various options, including sex reassignment surgery." He added a team from the hospital's psychiatry department would evaluate the man and provide counselling.
