ALLAHABAD: Weeks after a five-member committee from National Commission for Women (NCW) visited the varsity’s Women’s Hostel to probe the alleged lapses in inmates’ security, now the body’s chairperspon
Rekha Sharma would visit Allahabad University (AU) in January first week.
The proposed visit comes at a time when the AU administration has been under attack for alleged lapses in hostel security.
The issue has also been raised by former AU Students’ Union president Richa Singh and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan.
“NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma will visit AU in January first week. She will visit the girls’ hostels and interact with the students,” said NCW member Shalini Singh, who was part of the committee which had visited AU.
Meanwhile, AU has initiated a number of steps to boost security of students. The administration has deployed women guards near hostels and has started including inmates as members of the mess committee to ensure quality meals.
On December 15, AU also constituted an eight-member committee of faculty members, led by RK Singh as its chairman, to look in to the demands of the inmates of the girls’ hostels. “The panel members have visited the WH campus several times and have interacted with inmates,” said AU public relations officer Chitranjan Kumar.
