PRAYAGRAJ: The remand magistrate here on Monday sent
Akhlaq Ahmed, a Meerut-based government doctor and brother-in-law of mafia don Atiq Ahmed, to jail in 14 days’ judicial custody in connection with Umesh Pal
murder case. The magistrate has fixed April 15 as the next date in this case, when Akhlaq will again be produced for extension of the said remand.
Akhlaq was arrested by Special Task Force (STF) from his Meerut residence on Saturday night on the charges of giving shelter and providing money to the killers of Umesh Pal, the key witness in the murder case of BSP MLA Raju Pal. He was then taken to Prayagraj.
It is alleged that Akhlaq, who was posted at Abdullapur Community Health Centre, not only provided shelter to the killers of Umesh Pal, but also money when they reached Meerut after the murder. According to district government counsel (criminal), Gulab Chandra Agrahri, after arresting Akhlaq from Meerut, the STF team reached Prayagraj on Sunday and as per law, produced Akhlaq before the remand magistrate of Prayagraj district court.
Umesh Pal and his two police security guards – Sandeep Nishad and Raghvendra Singh — were shot dead on February 24, 2023, outside his home in the Dhoomanganj police station area of Prayagraj. On a complaint lodged by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal, a criminal case was registered at Dhoomanganj police station against Atiq, his brother Ashraf, two sons, aides – Guddu Muslim and Ghulam and nine others. Sources say that a warrant has also been issued against Atiq in connection with a case of
extortion registered against him in the year 2021 at police station Kareli. A police team has gone to Sabarmati jail of Gujarat to hand over a warrant to Atiq, who is lodged there.
