Allahabad Museum holds exhibition of docus, articles on Dr Ambedkar
Prayagraj: Paying tributes to Dr BR Ambedkar on his 135th birth anniversary, the Allahabad Museum organised a special exhibition of documents and newspaper articles on Dr Ambedkar on Tuesday.
Articles, commentaries and images published in newspapers during the post-independence era, providing a crucial foundation for understanding the social and ideological milieu of that time, were displayed at the exhibition. These articles not only chronicle events but also reveal society’s attitude towards Dr Ambedkar, the reception of his ideas and the intensity of his struggle.
An article titled ‘Biography of a Man with a Mission,’ published in the English newspaper ‘Bharat Jyoti,’ portrays Dr Ambedkar as a visionary and resolute leader and presented his life as ‘a Relentless Fight Against Social Tyranny and Injustice,’ underscoring the continuity and profundity of his struggle.
Similarly, an article titled ‘Ambedkar: The Fighter – Record of a Struggle’ depicts his life as a continuous campaign characterised by intellectual fortitude and social commitment.
An article titled ‘Baba Saheb Ambedkar: Pioneer of Social Revolution,’ published in a Hindi newspaper, portrays him as a powerful advocate for the deprived and exploited sections of society. It notes that he not only sensitised the marginalised classes to their rights but also inspired them to unite and wage a collective struggle. In this context, his movement is viewed as a broad-based ‘Human Rights Consciousness Movement.’ Articles published in The Times of India and the National Herald in 1956 lend further historical depth to this exhibition. In “Ambedkar Replies,” he explicitly wrote: “Caste is not merely a division of labour; it is a division of labourers.” Through this statement, he exposed the complexities of the caste system and its detrimental consequences. According to him, democracy would remain incomplete until the values of equality, liberty and fraternity were firmly established within society.
These articles make it evident that Dr Ambedkar’s intellectual thought was multifaceted. Identifying economic inequality as the root cause of social injustice, he advocated equal opportunities and a just social order. In one article, he is described as a proponent of the principle that “Economic justice is the foundation of social democracy.” Moreover, his stance against religious dogmas and orthodoxy was equally incisive.
These newspaper archives also clearly demonstrate that his contribution to the freedom struggle was of immense ideological significance. His vision was to build an India where social justice and equality could be truly realised. Newspapers published from intellectual hubs such as Prayagraj played a pivotal role in disseminating his ideas to the wider public.
Organised by the Allahabad Museum, this exhibition is not merely a compilation of documents, but a living reflection of the intellectual consciousness of that era.
