Despite raids police failed to nab the accused giving rise to suspicion that the accused had left the city.
Following a fight with Jamaluddin, his wife returned to her parents' house in Sultanpur Khas. Three months back she had moved the family court demanding maintenance allowance. The court verdict had gone against Jamaluddin. Since then he had been harbouring a grudge against his wife.
Victim's family claimed that the accused had been pressurizing the family into withdrawing the case and had even threatened of dire consequences. On Monday, when Jamaluddin's wife Gulshan and her younger sister were on way to appear in an exam along with another person, he threw a bottle of acid on them. It also resulted in injuries to a friend of his sister-in-law. Meanwhile, women organizations have demanded immediate arrest of the accused. Secretary of Progressive Writers Association Sandhya Nivedita said that existing laws have failed to deter such incidents. Another social worker said that authorities must take corrective measures without delay.
As many as five cases of acid throwing were reported in the region in the past two-and-a-half-month.
