AJMER: Amid the growing Indo-Pak tension, the district administration of
Ajmer
has denied issuing no-objection certificate to students of Aitchison College, Lahore, who were to take part in a student-exchange programme in Ajmer.
The group of 11 students accompanied by three teachers from
Pakistan was expected to attend the
exchange programme
of Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs at Ajmer's
Mayo College
between October 2-5. However, the delegation had to return from Wagah border after administration denied the mandatory NoC which led to the cancellation of the exchange programme by Mayo College. Sources said that even police was not ready to provide security to the delegation that was strongly protested by saffron and other groups.
District collector Gaurav Goyal said that in view of protests by Hindu outfits, the NoC could not be granted for the event. "Looking at the sentiments of people here, it is risky to take responsibility of security for this delegation as the movement of these students would not have been limited to Mayo College campus as they had plans to visit the dargah and
Pushkar," he said, adding that the
Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports
has been apprised of the decision.
"In view of public sentiments, the management committee of Mayo college has decided to call off the event under sports and cultural exchange programme," said Achal Deep Dubey, senior English teacher of the college. With certain Hindu outfits protesting the arrival of Pakistani students, security had been beefed up at college premises.
For last five years, Mayo college and a school from Pakistan have been participating in student-exchange programme for a better understanding of the education system of both countries. Sources claimed that the delegation reached Wagah border on Thursday but was asked to return.
