Ajmer woman duped of ₹15k after receiving ‘distress call’
Ajmer: A woman in the city was duped of Rs 15,000 after she received a call on Thursday from a person who said her son, studying in a different city, had been accused of rape and drug use in an FIR.The victim, Vidhya Nand, told police that the caller claimed he could get her son’s name removed from the list of accused if she paid up Rs 80,000. Fearing for her son, she deposited Rs 15,000 into the bank account provided by the caller only to realise she had been duped. She then lodged a case at Ganj police station.Police said Nand lives alone on Foisagar Road, and her son studies in another city. She said in her complaint that the caller told her on Thursday morning that an FIR had been registered against her son for rape and drug use and that his life would be ruined. She said she made a transfer of Rs 15,000 and then decided to speak to her son before transferring more money. When she called him, he said he was fine and denied his involvement in any such case. Nand then approached police.A Pushkar resident, Suraj Nath, also lodged a complaint at Ganj police station, claiming he received a message about Rs 5.2 lakh being withdrawn from his account. He verified this with the bank and found it to be true. He told police that he neither received any OTP nor any message about the withdrawal of money from his bank account and that the withdrawal was without his consent.
