GANDHINAGAR: With temperatures shooting up to 40 degrees C, the state forest department has revived more than 400 water points for lions and other wild animals in Gir lion sanctuary.
Sources said that the natural water points in the sanctuary have started drying up and therefore, the department has started releasing water in small ponds and other outlets so that lions, panthers, cheetals and Sambhars can quench their thirst.

There are 359 lions, 250 panthers, 4,000 sambhars and 40,000 cheetals in Gir, which is one of the biggest wildlife sanctuaries in the state.
Alongwith the special arrangements made for lions in Gir, the forest department has also implemented its drill for providing adequate water in other wildlife sanctuaries at Ratanmahal in Panchmahals, which is famous for sloth bears and also Jambughoda in Vadodara district, which has a sizeable number of panthers.
A senior forest official said that the department has also taken adequate precautionary measures against possible forest fires in Gir sanctuary and other wildlife sanctuaries.
A forest fire had broken out in Amreli range, bordering Gir lion sanctuary last month and the fire fighting staff had controlled the flames before they engulfed more areas of forest.
"The beat guards and fire control squads have been put on alert, as the possibility of a forest fire can not be ruled out and all efforts have been made to protect wildlife." he said.
