Water cans, milk crates, oil tins turn easy pickings for thieves

Ahmedabad: A series of thefts involving basic goods has caught the attention of police in Ahmedabad. From water canisters to milk crates and edible oil tins, items usually seen as routine stock are now being targeted. The incidents have been reported from different parts of the city within days of each other. Police believe some may be linked to easy resale or reuse.Police have registered multiple cases at Sarkhej and Vastrapur police stations following complaints from traders and vendors.In one case, Javedali Saiyed, a trader from Fatewadi, reported that around 90 water canisters were stolen from outside his godown near Ambar Tower in Sarkhej. He told police that he had shut the warehouse around 1am on April 22, leaving the empty canisters outside. When he returned around 9am, all the canisters had disappeared. The value of the stolen items has not been mentioned in the complaint.In another incident, a milk distributor reported theft at a residential society gate in Vastrapur. Ramesh Patel, who works as a supervisor and distributes milk, said three crates of milk were stolen on April 28. Each crate contained 24 packets of 500ml milk. The total loss, including the crates and milk packets, was estimated at Rs 3,942. Patel added that a similar theft involving three crates took place again the next morning at the same spot, affecting another vendor.Separately, Sarkhej police have also registered a case of suspected internal theft at a private company warehouse in Makarba. The complaint was filed by Mohammed Shehzad Pathan, a shift in-charge, after a stock check revealed missing items. These included 31 tins of edible oil, eight tins of another oil variant and one sack of sugar, with the total loss estimated at Rs 1.03 lakh.According to the complaint, CCTV footage shows an employee, Noman Shaikh, allegedly moving the goods towards a bathroom and taking them out through a broken window. The items were then reportedly transported on a two-wheeler during night hours.
