The incident was reported to police and an investigation was launched. From local informers, police got a lead pointing to the village Chosar.
"We inquired in the vicinity and found that the night sentry duty was performed by some residents of nearby housing societies. This security was set up with mutual consent to prevent any theft of valuables. We rounded up the people involved in the night security. One of them seemed more suspicious during questioning. We probed deeper and he broke down and told us that it was he along with three others who committed the crime," said GP Chauhan, inspector of Vatva police station.
Police nabbed Rajendra Thakor, a resident of Chosar, for the incident. Thakor in turn named Ramesh Bharwad, Mukesh Thakor and Poonam Thakor as his accomplices. In his version, Thakor said that they had approached a man who was bare bodied and was not able to communicate properly and seemed to speaking in an incomprehensible language. Thakor said that he had seen him more than three to four times loitering around and had suspected him to be a thief. When they approached the stranger, he started running away and also fought with them. Enraged, the four guards attacked him and beat him up with sticks.
"The group of four had gone berserk and had thrashed the man brutally. After some time when the victim did not respond to their brutalities, they realized their folly. Then the group got frightened and decided to dispose off the body. They then got a sack and two men got him in between on a bike and went to the ring road. When they came across an isolated spot, they threw the body into bushes and made a dash," said Chauhan. He said that the man does not have any identity document on him but from his features, officials believe him to be a person from outside the state.
