AHMEDABAD: Following representations by animal welfare groups against provisions of the Livestock and Livestock Products (Importation and Exportation) Bill 2023, the Union government has withdrawn the draft bill. Animal welfare activists from the state met Union animal husbandry minister
Parshottam Rupala earlier this week and voiced their concerns about the draft bill.
The note of the Union ministry of fisheries, animal husbandry and dairying, issued on June 20, 2023, said that during the consultation, it had been viewed that enough time is required to understand the proposed draft and to make further comments and suggestions.
“Further, representations have been made expressing concerns on the proposed draft involving sensitivity and emotions with animal welfare and related aspects and hence would need wider consultation. Considering the aforesaid views and with approval of the competent authority, the proposed draft bill stands withdrawn,” the ministry note said.
