RAJKOT: Vinod Girdhar Lohana, an undertrial in Rajkot jail, died of Aids. He died during treatment after he was shifted to the civil hospital following deterioration of his condition.
A post-mortem was done in the presence of the sub-divisional magistrate. Lohana was sent to jail on November 15, 1999 as an undertrial for his role in the murder of Shobhraj Sindhi and looting of Rs 5 lakh.
According to jail officials, the Human Rights Commission has been informed about the death of the undertrial.
Meanwhile, some 19 cases of Aids were detected in Amreli district in the period between January and August.
The figures were released by the Amreli civil hospital where HIV tests were being conducted. Most of those affected were labourers and lower middle-class people.
Alarmed over the high rate of Aids cases in Amreli, health officials conducted a door-to-door survey to identify persons suffering fromthe dreaded disease.
