Patan medical college submits action taken report to UGC

Ahmedabad: The authorities of the GMERS Medical College and Hospital at Dharpur, Patan, submitted the action taken report (ATR) in connection with the death of a first-year MBBS student, allegedly during ragging, to the University Grants Commission (UGC).
An official from Patan medical college said, "The UGC sought an action taken report from the college, seeking details of the circumstances of the death, how many students were involved in the ragging incident, and who all were victimised. The commission also asked what steps were taken by the college so far."
The official further said, "We submitted the action taken report to the UGC stating that an official police complaint was lodged against the perpetrators who are second-year students. These include Avdhesh Patel, Hiren Prajapati, Tushar Gohalekar, Prakash Desai, Jaymin Chaudhary, Pravin Chaudhary, Vivek Rabari, Rutvik Limbadia, Mehul Dhedhatar, Surjal Baldania, Haresh Chavda, Vaibhav Raval, Parag Kalsaria, Utpal Vasava, and Vishal Chaudhary. These students were also suspended from all academic activities."
The college authorities informed the UGC about their implementation of the anti-ragging regulations and subsequent committee meetings held after the incident. Attempts to contact Dr Hardik Shah, the college's in-charge dean, were unsuccessful. The incident occurred on the night of Nov 16, when Anil Methaniya and 11 other first-year students experienced harassment allegedly from senior students. The seniors allegedly forced them to perform inappropriate songs and dances and physically assaulted them. The victims were compelled to drink excessive water and denied toilet access for hours.
Police reports indicate that Methaniya lost consciousness after being forced to stand for hours when he failed to comply with senior students' demands. He sustained severe internal head injuries after falling and subsequently died at the hospital.
