AHMEDABAD: Few know that one of the most successful English cricket captains of all time, John Michael ‘Mike’ Brearley, is also a psychoanalyst and married Mana Sarabhai of the Sarabhai family. Brearley, on a visit to Ahmedabad, delivered a talk on ‘Captaining a Team, Captaining Ourselves’, at the BM Institute of Mental Health on Thursday.
Dr
Madhu Singh, director of the institute, said Brearley spoke about several issues, ranging from the lessons from his cricketing days to how to reduce ‘toxicity’ in corporate organizations.
“He said that one of the first lessons he learned was to listen to his teammates and to give them freedom and space to express themselves. He added that like manager of an organization, a captain is a part of the team and evolves with them,” she said.
The former cricketer also spoke about personal development and growth through ‘captaining’ one’s self and constantly adapting to changing situations.
About Indian cricket at the moment, Brearley all was praises for the team and especially for captain Virat Kohli and his leadership.
A number of academicians, corporate leaders and students of psychology attended the event, said organizers.
