Ahmedabad: The torrential rains on Sunday hurt transportation of goods as well. The dispatch and loading was disturbed on Monday in many parts of the city. According to estimates, there was about a 25% decrease in dispatch and loading-unloading of goods due to waterlogging.
Nimesh Patel, managing committee member of the Akhil Gujarat Truck Transport Association said, “Transportation activities have not seen major difficulties on major highways so far and we have not seen long queues of trucks.
Some parts have seen disturbance in movements but the main routes have not had major disruption. However, the Sunday rain in Ahmedabad affected loading and unloading significantly in places such as Changodar, Vatva and Odhav. Apart from the waterlogging, the main problem was that people could not reach warehouses on Monday morning. We believe the situation will return to normal in a few days.”
A number of highways, in remote areas, have been washed away, which is hampering transportation.
“If it continues to rain with the same intensity, more trucks will go off the road. A lot of finished goods are waiting to be loaded at factories on the outskirts of Ahmedabad and Surat, both of which have been battered by rain and flooding,” said an Ahmedabad-based transport company proprietor.
