AHMEDABAD: If you were spellbound by the beauty of the Karanj chabutra (bird feeder) and want to know why Mahatma Gandhi chose Ahmedabad to set up an ashram in 1915 because of the thriving Jain and Vaishnav cultures, then you should take the Jain heritage walk organized by TOI. The walk will begin from the City Heritage Centre at Sankhedi Sheri in Manek Chowk.
The unique walk, conducted by Girish Gupta, will take visitors to 33 Jain sites in the Walled City. The two-hour walk, spanning a little below 2km, will take place on August 30. Those interested can still register for this unique TOI walk. The walk will cover important Jain temples including Vasupujya temple and end at Shamla Parshavnath temple in Lambeshwar ni Pol.
The walk is being designed in consultation with members of the Jain International Trade Organisation (JITO), City Heritage Centre and residents of neighbouring pols. Pravesh Mehta of JITO says, “We want Amdavadis to connect to the thriving Jain culture in the walled city. We have to preserve it for the coming generation and learn to value it." CHC coordinator Rajiv Patel said that the walk will go a long way in supporting the city's bid for a UNESCO world’s heritage city status.
