Spy ring: 2 picked up in Kutch

AHMEDABAD: The Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and

Gujarat

Anti-Terrorist Squad on Wednesday evening picked up a man from Abdasa and his friend from Nakhatrana, for allegedly working for people who allegedly passed on information about movements of the Indian Army, BSF and Air Force

in Kutch

to Pakistan.

On January 13, Uttar Pradesh had busted an alleged

spy ring

run by Pakistanis which would use honey traps and had got some 50 persons to provide sensitive information about vital installations and movements of India troops. Gujarat police officials said the UP Special Task Force (STF) officers contacted their counterparts in Gujarat on Wednesday morning and gave them intelligence about alleged spies in Kutch. By evening the men were picked up from Abdasa and Nakhatrana.

Gujarat ATS officials said while one of the two was already on their radar, they are questioning the other. “The mobile phone numbers of both were found on phones seized by the UP STF from the accused arrested there, and what information they sent to the Pakistanis is to be retrieved,” a Gujarat ATS official said.

“The two have not been arrested officially but are being interrogated at the special operations group (SOG) office in Bhuj.

UP STF had busted a spy ring some time ago. “During the interrogation of the accused by UP STF, the name of the Abdasa man and his friend in Nakhatrana, had cropped up. Senior Gujarat police officials said the man from Abdasa fell into an honey trap laid by Pakistan’s ISI. “According to the UP STF, the man used to chat with the woman on a daily basis and would allegedly provide information about the movement of the Army, BSF and Air Force in Kutch,” a senior investigator said.

Gujarat ATS said they had one man on their radar earlier and had picked up him. “During his interrogation nothing suspicious came out and he was allowed to go but we kept an eye on him. Now when the UP STF has come with his name, we suspect he is involved in the espionage ring. We are looking for other such agents who are providing information to the ISI over the phone,” an ATS official said.
