Sindhi community upset over exam on festival day
Ahmedabad: Members of the Sindhi community are upset as their demand that the board exams scheduled for Thursday be deferred was not accepted.
In January, community members had written to the chief minister asking him to reschedule the Class 10-12 board exams as one date was clashing with the Cheti Chand festival.
The exams began on March 14 and will end on March 29. Papers have been scheduled for Thursday, which is the day of the Cheti Chand festival.
Sources said community leaders approached political leaders and wrote to the CM, saying the state government’s holiday calendar had mistakenly put the Cheti Chand holiday on March 22 but the festival was actually on March 23.
This caused the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) to schedule papers for March 23. The Class 10 social science paper, Class 12 general stream psychology paper and Class 12 science stream’s English first and second language papers are scheduled for March 23.
The letter wanted the holiday calendar amended with Cheti Chand on March 23, and having the board defer the exams to solve the problem.
Sindhi community members said 1 lakh students from their community will have to take their exams on Thursday and will not be able to celebrate their most important festival. tnn
