AHMEDABAD: India celebrates the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, popularly known as M Visvesvaraya, as Engineer's Day to recognize the importance of engineer's work for society. Science City and Gujarat Council on Science and Technology marked the occasion with outreach programmes in the state.
Born on September 15, 1860, Visvesvaraya is remembered today for his pioneering work in harnessing water resources as well as design and construction of several river dams, bridges and implementing irrigation and drinking water schemes all over India.

He was called a wizard in engineering and precursor of economic planning in India.
He was awarded Bharat Ratna posthumously in 1955. About 150 engineering students of Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar participated in discussion on the topic 'Discovering Engineering.' Prof Mukund Rai Joshi, Prof H S Devmurari of SAL College of Engineering and Rajendra Bhambha of ONGC conducted interactive session and discussed the challenges of engineering with students.
"Engineers use their imagination and analytical skills to invent, design, and build things that matter. They are team players with independent minds who turn ideas into reality. Many become licensed professional engineers in order to better protect the health, safety, and welfare of the public," said Narottam Sahoo, senior scientist, Science City.
