At around 6.44am on Monday, another RSS worker and Kalu's friend, Ghanshyam Ratanpara, called Kalu's son Chandraketu and told him that his father had met with an accident. Chandraketu rushed to the spot and found his father lying dead on a heap of soil in an open plot near Lalgebi Ashram. The car driver had fled and his vehicle was left in the bushes, said Chandraketu in his FIR.
Chandraketu said Ratanpara told him that he and Kalu were walking on the road when a speeding car hit Kalu, dragged him till the heap and then hit a babul tree.
The driver left the car and fled, said Chandraketu, adding that there was a bottle of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) in the car. A separate complaint was lodged against the driver under prohibition charges.
Sources in Bopal police said the suspect has been identified as
Mayur Patel from Ghuma, who was drunk at the time of accident. Later, Patel's pictures showing him holding a glass of liquor at a party went viral. Chandraketu also said in his complaint that an investigation should be conducted against Patel in the accident case.
The IO of the case, PSI Dharmishtha Dhandhalia of Bopal police, said that the accused was not yet identified. "The car owner's name is Mayur Patel but we are yet to ascertain if he was driving the car or if someone else was driving it," she said.
