Ring of intrigue to police transfers

AHMEDABAD: Not many were surprised when the Modi ordered transfer of 49 IPS officers.

AHMEDABAD: Not many were surprised when the Modi government on Friday ordered the transfer of 49 IPS officers, including additional DGPs, on Friday afternoon. Two names in the list, however, indicated an urgent provocation for the move �� that of Additional DGP CID (crime) Kuldeep Sharma and Spl IGP Rajan Priyadarshi.
By Thursday evening, an exasperated minister of state for home Amit Shah, sources say, had marked these two officers for having ��defied�� him in connection with two investigations.One being the gangrape of a 23-year-old Dalit law student from Limdi, in which Shah wanted the investigating officer to have the victim undergo a lie-detector test.
And the other being the Official Secrets Act (OSA) case lodged after an alleged Dawood Ibrahim aide, Umarmiya Bukhari alias Mammumiyan, confessed to being in touch with Sharma.
Shah��s name, apparently, had been dragged into the second case, which had caused immense embarrassment to him. The last straw for Sharma was after CID sleuths booked one of Shah��s confidants Kamlesh Tripathi, a BJP leader from Vejalpur, in an extortion case.

The law student was allegedly kidnapped by four persons �� Dinesh Gandhi, Vipul Dania, Milan Deliwala and Rupak Deliwala �� on February 11 when she was cycling to college. A police team, led by sub-inspector BM Tank of Limdi, tracked the girl to one Rameshbhai��s house in Dadar and brought her back on June 9 and returned her to her parents.
However, on hearing the sordid tales about how she was gangraped in Surat, Vadodara and Mumbai, her parents insisted that the police file a case, but in vain. Finally, they approached Priyadarshi who got an FIR lodged on June 24 against the four persons. A suspension notice was issued to Tank and offences were lodged against him and his three subordinates. Annoyed at the course of investigations, Shah held a meeting of Priyadarshi and other officers on Thursday where he directed them to put the girl through the liedetector, which the officers refused.
Finally, the transfer orders were executed on Friday. Priyadarshi has been moved as IGP (border range) and Sharma will be Addl DGP (training).
