AHMEDABAD: Mundra customs officials recovered 8 tonnes of red sandalwood concealed in jute bags inside a Dubai bound consignment on Friday.
The consignment from a Delhi based exporter, disguised as fabricated steel structure had been dispatched for Dubai last month. "The consignment had already left the Indian waters. However when we got information from intelligence about the actual contents of the consignment, we called it back," said a customs official.
The container returned to Mundra port on Thursday.The value of the seized consignment is estimated at around Rs 80 lakh in the international market.
Another 15 tonnes of red sandalwood worth Rs 1.5 crore was found by the Gujarat police in an abandoned truck near Gandhidham on Thursday.
Two days back, Mundra customs officials called back a consignment that was dispatched to Malaysia after receiving intelligence inputs. Officials found 10 tonnes of red sandalwood worth Rs 1 crore in the boxes.
