AHMEDABAD: There might be a political link in the hooch tragedy that killed over 150 persons last week. Investigations by crime branch revealed the name of Subhash Giri who had introduced Vinod Chauhan alias Dagri and Sunil More, the bootlegger from Vadodara, to Jayesh Thakkar, who supplied the deadly methyl alcohol. Now it has turned out that Subhash is a BJP leader who had contested the Vadodara Municipal Corporation elections in 1995 from Gorwa ward and lost. Earlier, opposition leader Shaktisinh Gohil had alleged in the state Assembly that a BJP corporator was involved in the scam. He was referring to Rasik Sodha, but this was refuted by the ruling party. But in this case, the police investigations have revealed that Subhash's nephew Rakesh Giri was known to More. The probe revealed that when Dagri wanted help, he came to More who was referred to Subhash through Rakesh. Subhash, who knew Thakkar, had reportedly told him, "Help my nephew in whatever he wants." The names of Giris surfaced at a press conference of director general of police Sabir Khandwawala on Friday when describing the nexus between Dagri and Thakkar. Apparently, More knew Rakesh, a local goon who introduced him to Subhash, a chemicals dealer. Thus Dagri and More met Thakkar.
